Madden aspired to be a football player and participated in high school football. He went on to play with Car Poly’s Mustangs. He was then picked by the Philadelphia Eagles, but he hurt his second knee throughout training camp. As a result, he was never able to play professional football.

Madden worked as a broadcaster for all four major American television networks from 1979 through 2003, notably Fox Sports, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, and ABC Sports.
