He attended Leeds High School. He didn’t make the varsity team but was named as a reserve for the team. However, during his senior year, he grew to 6 ft 4 inches (1.93 meters) and earned a starting spot on the varsity team.

Barkley garnered no attention Until the state high school semifinals when he scored 26 points against Bobby Lee Hurt, who was considered one of the top recruits in the country.

Barkley played 82 games in his first season in pro basketball, starting 60 of them, and averaged 14.0 points per contest on average. The 76ers made the playoffs, where Barkley played in 13 games, started 2 of them, and averaged 14.9 points per contest. He was in 24 playoff games and he ultimately led his team to the Finals where they lost to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.

He played for three more seasons for Phoenix Suns before he was traded to the Houston Rockets in 1996. His first season with Houston Rockets didn’t go so well as he was constantly injured.

On December 8, 1999, he suffered a rupture of his left quadriceps tendon in a game against the 76ers.  After this injury, it seemed that his career was over. However, he didn’t want the injury to be the end of his career so he came back for one more game.
